On May 12, 2010 an Airbus A330 passenger plane crashed at Tripoli Airport, Libya. Of all 104 occupants just a little boy survived. He is not the first sole survivor of an aircraft accident involving many fatalities.
1) 16 August 1987 – 154 fatalities
A Northwest Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82 passenger jet crashed on takeoff from Detroit-Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, MI. The lone survivor of the aircraft was a four-year-old girl named Cecelia Cichan.
2) 30 JUN 2009 – 152 fatalities
Yemenia Airways flight 626, an Airbus A310-324 passenger jet, crashed into the sea while on approach to Moroni Airport, Comoros. The lone survivor of the aircraft was a 13-year-old girl named Bahia Bakar.
3) 05 October 1991 – 134 fatalities
An Indonesian Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Jakarta-Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport. One passenger is said to have surived the accident with serious burns.
4) 08 July 2003 – 116 fatalities
Sudan Airways Flight 139, a Boeing 737-200, crashed struck terrain when the crew carried out a missed approach procedure at Port Sudan Airport. A two-year old boy, Mohammed el-Fateh Osman, survived the accident. He was flown to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.
5) 20 November 1993 – 115 fatalities
An Avioimpex Yakovlev 42D passenger plane flew into the side of a mountain near Ohrid, Macedonia. A 23-year old passenger, Rade Jevremovic, survived.
6) 10 December 2005 – 108 fatalities
A Sosoliso Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 passenger crashed on landing at Port Harcourt Airport, Nigeria. A 16-year old passenger, Kechi Okwuchi, survived.
7) 12 May 2010 – 104 fatalities
An Afriqiyah Airways Airbus A330-202 passenger jet crashed on landing at Tripoli International Airport, Libya. A 9-year-old Dutch boy, Ruben van Assouw, survived.
8 ) 6 March 2003 – 102 fatalities
An Air Algérie Boeing 737-200 passenger jet crashed on takeoff from Tamanrasset Airport, Algeria. The sole survivor of the accident was identified as 28-year-old soldier Youcef Djillali.
9) 09 August 1970 – 99 fatalities
A LANSA Lockheed L-188A Electra turboprop crashed shortly after takeoff from Cuzco Airport, Peru. The sole survivor was 26-year-old Juan Loo.
10) 24 December 1971 – 91 fatalities
A LANSA Lockheed L-188A Electra turboprop crashed in mountainous terrain near Puerto Inca after lightning strike. A 17-year-old German teenager, Juliane Köpcke, fell down into the Amazon rainforest strapped to her seat. She was able to trek through the dense Amazon jungle for 10 days, until she was rescued by local lumbermen.
